Abstract

ABSTRACT
Congestive heart failure or CHF is the failure of the heart to distribute oxygen as needed
during tissue metabolism. According to WHO, CHF is one of the most common causes of
cardiovascular disease whose prevalence is increasing every year. Heart failure patients
experience a lot of anxiety that varies, from mild anxiety to severe anxiety. Anxiety in
CHF patients can be caused because they have difficulty maintaining adequate
oxygenation. Handling with various interventions is needed to reduce the anxiety
experienced by the patient. The important role of nurses in this stage is to reduce
anxiety complaints experienced by patients by using one of the nursing theories, namely
the comfort theory of Katharine Kolcaba. This study used a qualitative method through
interviews with 4 participants, consisting of 2 men and 2 women. The research themes
were found, signs and symptoms experienced by CHF patients, medical history, family
support, patient's race/culture, CHF patients' efforts to reduce symptoms, knowledge of
the disease, anxiety, comfort, daily activities, age of participants, health services given by
the hospital, the patient's self-image and the economy/income. It is hoped that this
research can be a reference for deeper studies related to Kolcaba's theory of comfort,
especially to reduce patient anxiety when patients are undergoing treatment.
